Laser Treatments For Smoother Skin

What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser scar removal is one more beneficial application of Laser technology to treat skin imperfections with a potential to reduce 50% to 80% of unsightly facial scars when done right.

How It Works?

During the laser therapy procedure, the laser beam moves along the scar to vaporize or remove a skin layer to expose a fresher and more youthful looking skin that heals over time without scarification.

Other laser types target lower dermal layers to stimulate new collagen growth to correct skin aberrations. The outpatient procedure is often done under local or general anesthesia depending on the extent of the therapy and can last from a few minutes to one and a half hours.

The CO2 and Erbium (Er:YAG) lasers are preferred in treating acne scarring. As an ablative laser, the CO2 basically sandblasts the skin away. The Erbium is similarly ablative, but of lesser power than the CO2. Fractionated CO2 and Erbium including the Fraxel  laser treatment require multiple treatments. They work treating a fraction of the skin's surface, hence, the name.  These lasers induce tiny wounds in the deeper layer of the skin which heal in a controlled wound-healing process to produce new and better modeled skin.

Non-ablative lasers such as the 585-595-nm pulsed dye laser technology as well as Candela and Cynosure lasers are harnessed to treat protruding keloid and hypertrophic scars. They do not burn off the skin but target the underlying tissues to stimulate fresh collagen growth. These lasers may use steroid or five percent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) injections to help flatten the scars.

Candidates Laser Scar Removal

Laser therapy is best recommended for patients who suffer from and would like to reduce or minimize several types of scars like Keloid Scarring which are raised reddish-purple scars protruding above the skin surface that can extend beyond the wound area.

Hypertrophic Scarring which is likewise raised scars but remain within the initial wound area and may even go away over time. Atrophic Scarring are the more common skin depressions caused mostly by acne outbreaks and loss of tissue under the skin.

But Laser scar removal may not be for everyone. People with skin disorders like cystic acne, psoriasis and dermatitis may not be ideal candidates. Those using certain drugs notably Accutane-based isotretinoin for treating acne should cease using the medication six months prior to laser therapy.

African-Americans were not considered ideal candidates for laser scar removal, but some lasers like fractionated infrared lasers can be used to treat acne scars among peoples with dark complexion

Cost, Result, Any Side Effects?

After a laser scar removal session, patients are advised to use only mild soap in gently washing the treated area. An antibiotic is also prescribed to prevent infection. Medicated creams are also recommended to help the scar fade. Since there will be pain, your doctor can prescribe oral pain killers.  The skin’s regeneration process usually starts 4 days after the therapy depending on the extent of process and your skin condition. You will be asked for a return session to evaluate the results in 6-8 weeks.

Patients face possible Hyperpigmentation or Hypopigmentation with laser therapy which can be aggravated by sun exposure. Infection or allergic reactions likewise present possible risks but can be prevented with medicated ointments, creams and oral antibiotics as an aftercare regimen.

Estimating the cost of Laser therapy in scar removal includes anesthesia fees, facility and professional fees. Depending on the severity of scarring, Laser therapy sessions can be multiple to arrive at the target results. It’s also possible that other procedures like chemical peels can be performed in tandem with laser therapy so the cost can vary widely on many factors.

Be sure to check with your dermatologists on the extent of the therapy you need before getting an estimate. Just take note this is a cosmetic procedure that can cost upwards of $3,000 per treatment session and is not covered by any health insurance. If the cost is too high, ask your dermatologist about monthly payments.
